Visitors, the next series of exhibitions comprising Art CommissionsGI, the Trust for Governors Island’s public art program, features the work of nine contemporary artists using multiple artistic platforms including performance, visual arts, interactive technology and written pieces to create experiences for Island visitors.

The artists in Visitors descend on Governors Island to create New York City inspired fictions. The historical site of the Island operates as a backdrop that emphasizes the imagined space of the City; it is a location that encourages fantasy and parody, a free space nestled in the harbor between Lower Manhattan and Red Hook, Brooklyn under the watchful gaze of the Statue of Liberty – a place of escape and the imaginary. The artists in Visitors consider this fact through absurdity, cheap tricks, and science fantasy narratives. Through their works, Governors Island becomes an alternate reality, one continuously shifting between its historical past as a military base, current use as a public park, and its potential future.


Visitors is both an exhibition of public interventions and an artist publication available online and in hard copy for a nominal fee of $1 at various sites throughout the Island. The artists’ publication provides a double-take on mapping the Island and the leisure activities that the journey anticipates with specially commissioned pages created by each of the nine selected artists. It also guides an actual and imagined experience within the Island, with artist contributions that refer to onsite works, as well as those that only exist within the psychological spaces created within its pages.

David Nolan Gallery is pleased to present Five Artists, curated by Matthew Schum.

On view from June 25 through August 1, the exhibition brings together an international group of artists whose art explores vernacular, political and art historical cultures across a variety of media.

According to the curator: "Five Artists is loosely based on Robert Altman’s film 1977 3 Women. Set somewhere in the California desert, the sparse narrative depicts three characters who occupy, overturn and eventually abandon their male-dominated community. Taking inspiration from the eroded landscape and classical mythology, the appropriation of patriarchy in the film’s conclusion involves the characters becoming an amalgamation of archetypal roles. Myth-making within recent art became a consideration when selecting artworks for the present exhibition. The various works suggest a displacement of political orders predicated on male values. They resist gendered formulas of making and art’s market-driven desertification, just as Altman’s most experimental film, in its time, did.”

On the occasion of the 6th edition of the Nouveau Festival, unlimited access to the Galerie Sud and Espace 315 from April 15 to July 20, 2015, upon presentation of the ticket "Museum & Exhibitions" purchased during this period only.
Whether it consists of board/parlour, language, video or strategy games, the common denominator of all these games is that they are governed by rules. It is precisely these rules that make it possible to change over from a game deployed freely [play] to a codified version [game]. This proposal brings together visual artists, performers and designers who see the rules of games as a matrix or score that can generate new and playful forms in contemporary creation. Overturning or reinventing them, the works exhibited make play with these rules, with some addressing the highly topical question of the "gamification" phenomenon: the extension of the domain of games to other spheres from which they are normally excluded. Certain performative works are activated through a system of rules, while other pieces are "played" directly by the audience, who follow instructions. The politic question of obedience and disobedience to these rules is also explored.

Kalmar konstmuseum is a regional museum for art, located in the city of Kalmar, Sweden. When the museum reopened in 2008, this was also the starting point for an ambition to become a nationally important museum of contemporary art, based in a region with an undisputed role in swedish and baltic history – in war as in peace.
This geographical role is now clearly visible in the exhibition profile, where regional and national artists often are juxtaposed with art from countries in the baltic area, as well as other countries with who Sweden has had a more or less peaceful exchange of culture throughout the centuries.
The museum consistently exchanges exhibitions as well as curator and artist contacts between Sweden and countries like Poland, Germany and Russia. As of late, the museum has contributed actively in the formation of network platforms between artists in countries such as Belarus, Georgia and Moldavia.

An exhibition featuring 20 new works of art by contemporary Dutch and international artists. Created in response to a Vincent van Gogh letter specifically selected for each artist, these artworks reflect on issues that were important to Van Gogh and that also resonate in the current artists’lives. The work of art enter into dialogue with Van Gogh’s work and as such, will be presented in the context of his paintings. The intriguing exhibition will show how, 125 years after his death, Vincent van Gogh is still inspiring the next generations of artists. Henk Schut from the Artery Foundation initiated When I give, I give Myself and is guest curator of the exhibition.
