The 2012 New Museum Triennial is the only recurring exhibition in the United States devoted to presenting young artists from around the globe. Opening to the public on February 15, the Triennial will feature thirty-four artists, artist groups, and temporary collectives, born between the mid-1970s and mid-1980s, many of whom have never before exhibited in the US. This second New Museum Triennial, titled"The Ungovernables," is curated by Eungie Joo, Keith Haring Director and Curator of Education and Public Programs, with Ryan Inouye, Curatorial Assistant. Several monitors appear in semi-public spaces around the festival center. Takala invites us to follow her game of tresspassing and challenging social situations. In all of her videos and performances she causes a lot of confusion with her subversive role-play.

Staging social situations that run counter to some unspoken societal convention is the favorite game of Takala. Breaking the rules implicit in pseudo public contexts and situations, the artist (usually performing herself) exposes the closed systems at work, from office spaces to shopping malls and dancehalls.

We are happy to announce the opening of the new exhibition, “How to Work (More for) Less”, at Kunsthalle Basel. The show has been developed as a series of modifications performed on the art works that constituted the previous group exhibition at Kunsthalle, which was entitled “How to Work”. In “How to Work”, we aimed at questioning all the different ways of working as an artist today. The exhibition brought together heterogeneous responses to the question of the basic motivations behind making art, the methods artists use, and the goals they want to achieve. The show investigated a range of contemporary modes of production, from the rhetorical elaboration of a typical studio practice to appropriation of existing cultural material or the blurring of boundaries between commercial and artistic work; from semi-clandestine, subversive operations in the public sphere to delegating work to a third party. These working methods and the strategies they represent can be traced back to several radical developments in 20th century art: the idea of questioning the exclusivity of artistic labor in Conceptual Art, the use of chance processes and found objects by Dadaists and Surrealists, but also Russian Productivism with its postulate of artistic work counting possibly as one of the types of non-alienated labor.

The idea was to continue working on the show that was already “there” and give it a new title: “How to Work Less”. This not only signals a productive interval in production; it also subverts the demand for absolute novelty that drives the majority of art exhibitions today and, at the same time, for shows whose premises and content are fully transparent, a commonly pursued objective in today’s contemporary exhibition operations. We hoped that by proposing to “work less” we could do more than that. One of the participating artists, Adriana Lara, points out that while emphasizing the declared wish to “work less”, the exhibition in fact requires substantial “brainwork” on the part of all participants (artists, curators, and audience alike) and ends up being more work intensive. In conclusion, Lara suggested a dialectic change of the title into “How to Work (More for) Less”, which was accepted as her contribution to the show.

Works seen in “How to Work” have been expanded, others rearranged, and still others shown in reduced form or even left out. Two more artists have been invited to “How to Work (More for) Less” who did not participate in “How to Work”: Judith Hopf and Pedro Wirz, with his special project of collaborative sculptural works for the back wall of the Kunsthalle.
As the constant increase of work efficiency, productivity, and profit is the core of capitalism, the refusal to work is an economic nightmare. The notion of “abandoning the workplace” or just “working less” critically addresses the distinction between work and leisure, which defines the capitalist organization of time. At the same time, taking a critical distance to work means more work—and this is what the artists in the show decided to do.

Pilvi Takala wins Prix de Rome 2011 Visual Arts

9th of June 2011 Pilvi Takala (FIN / NL, 1981) received the first prize Prix de Rome 2011 Visual Arts of € 45,000. The second prize of € 20,000 was awarded to Vincent Vulsma (NL, 1982). The two basic prizes of € 10,000 each were awarded to Priscila Fernandes (PT / NL, 1981) and Ben Pointeker (AT / NL, 1975). The award ceremony took place at SMART Project Space, Amsterdam. Also, the KPN Kunstprix was awarded to Petra Stavast, and the IMC Weekend Kinderjury announced Priscila Fernandes as their winner.

Act / OUT thematizes a variety of individual artistic acts in public space that evoke a persistent belief in the individual story. As gestures of subjective opposition they insert disconcerting moments into our daily, economically optimised procedures. Sediments on film, photo, in installation or drawing, show how the actions attract and repel, how they take shape in an interplay between beauty and subversion.

Sometimes in danger of being overshadowed by the recent attention for more conspicious urban interventions, there are artistic actions with a rather subtle, ambivalent tone using public space as their point of departure. Recognizing the public sphere as a diverse and agonistic discursive state, the exhibition assembles a varietyof approaches to “act out” that are inspired to intervene by political motives, metaphorical narratives or personal impulses. Aiming to blur the all too obvious imagery that determines our public sphere as well as our collective memory, the works range from playful and touching to the absurd and confronting. Therewith the artists introduce different perspectives on the current state of affairs. They stage exemplary situations that, in the act as well as transported to the exhibition room, both confront and
ensnare their public.

Act / OUT presents thus ten artists renegotiating our public sphere by engaging relationships between people, structures and modes of organization. The exhibition thus aims to broaden our perception of function in our spatial and social environment.

From 11 June until 25 September, the Fort of Asperen, part of the New Dutch Waterline, is the scene for a large international group exhibition curated by Bik Van der Pol.

The Fort of Asperen was erected in the 19th Century, but it was not until 12 April 1940 that the Fort was first prepared for war. Yet, the New Dutch Waterline became immediately obsolete as the German Luftwaffe flew over the Fort without problems; dropping their paratroopers far behind its defense line. This particular moment marked the end of the New Waterline's military function.

The system, although ingenious, never offered an adequate solution against 'intruders'. You could say the defense system was out-dated from the start, as it was based upon the outdated defensive principles of the first Dutch Waterline. To use this example as a metaphor we might question if it is at all possible, or desirable, for a society to try and keep out 'intruders' at all costs. The erected defense system turns out to be, despite all efforts, no match for the resourcefulness and imagination of the opponent who – often with amazingly simple means – escapes, breaks in, strikes back, or sets out another path.

Over time these 'means' have developed. Today, warfare follows a different trajectory, even more closely linked to economical and financial mobilization, the consequences of globalization and migration, technical innovation, and political interests. Warfare has developed a different guise. An important part of it takes place from afar; behind the keyboard, on the stockmarket, in the blogs and the media: places without any particular local fixture. Driven by economic efficiency and the growing influence of technical resources, an increasingly sophisticated arsenal of tools and strategies is developed to localize, identify, isolate, control and manipulate subjects. Speeded up by mass-media and populism, existence has become a rat-race to create the illusion of ultimate control and stability, set against the backdrop of capitalism, globalization and its related crises.

'Too late, too little, (and how) to fail gracefully' is inspired by the irony of Fort's military past. This summer the Fort will be home to a large scale multidisciplinary manifestation, that reflects on the impossibility and undesirability of building fortifications and creating expectations that are not (or cannot be) met. The project is articulated around the theme of 'intruders' and looks critically and with some irony to societal boundaries and barriers. When do we perceive the other as a threat? How are social barriers erected and how are these undermined? The manifestation strives, through artists projects and activities, to incite a broad audience to think about how territories are defined. Do borders indeed offer desired safety and protection? Or are they merely a mental construct?

The various artists projects and activities are developed under code-names, such as Trojan Horses, The Historical Fort, Early Warning Systems, Smokescreens and Camouflage, the Campaign and Infiltrators – opening the project to historical and contemporary issues, from ecology to warfare, internet developments and information terrorism, ownership and collectivity. The manifestation consists an exhibition and public program mediated by an imbedded publicity campaign, in the fort and its surroundings, with lectures, film screenings, installations, performances, and more.

Kaap is an exhibition of contemporary art consisting of new works made for the whole family. The exhibition will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on every weekend from 29 May to 10 July.

Artworks by artists from all over the world

The artistic management of this year’s Kaap was the work of Tiong Ang, artist and creator. He invited thirteen artists to take part. Each of them made a new work specially for Kaap. During the exhibition, each work will have an attendant guide to answer any questions about it. The idea of Kaap is that artists can find inspiration in the challenge of making work for children and in bringing out the essence of their art with absolute clarity. The work made for Kaap typically invites its public not just to look but also to take part.

The fort location

Kaap is pure adventure, a trip of discovery through the bunkers and the greenery of Fort Ruigenhoek. The historic fort, which forms part of the 17th century New Dutch Waterline, lies on an island surrounded by open countryside. The bunkers and other buildings lie half-buried in grass, shrubs and trees.

Stichting Storm

Kaap is an initiative of Stichting Storm. This foundation works closely with artists and theatre makers on projects aimed at a youthful audience. Among other things Storm organizes the Tweetakt theatre festival in Utrecht.

Located in the legendary Gdansk Shipyard, where the workers' strikes of 1980 began the process of the disintegration of the Communist bloc, Alternativa looks at the atmosphere of political momentum and its possibilities. Alternativa aims to investigate the ways in which contemporary art intersects with the political. It seeks diverse modes of knowing and is searching for a performative, affectual apparatus through which we can explore possible ways of existing in contemporaneity. For the exhibitions and events, the newly renovated spectacular space, Hall 90B, is made available along with Wyspa's and Modelarnia's own spaces.

The Summer 2011 programme will materialise in two exhibitions.

Labour and Leisure is a project encompassing that other side of labouring or what is out of sight of the typical representation of the work or worker. It seeks interest in stagnation, spare time and its uses, dreams and phantasies, false identities, forms of survival, frustrations of engagement and failures of transformation.

Estrangement: At the very core of the project there is the question of the circulation of cultural forms. The idea of considering the notion in this way arises at the intersection of the poetics of Shklovsky-a representative of Russian formalism-and the Arabic term taqseem, which means both musical improvisation and mathematical division. Found forms and 'everydayness' are points of entry into the way the project takes shape and disintegrates. 'Estrangement' works with various elements that do not seem to be connected then places them under observation and sometimes sets them to work.

Kunsthalle Lissabon is pleased to present Flip side, Pilvi Takala's first solo show in Portugal. Flip side will feature two recent works of the artist, The Messengers (2008) and the critically acclaimed Real Snow White (2009).

Through these two pieces, Flip side will look at the mechanisms that underly the construction of public personas, either a Disney-owned character that becomes too tangible, thus escaping the corporation control over collective subjectivities and associated profit, or a Croatian celebrity whose life and actions are defined and understood inasmuch as they are perceived and mediated through gossip magazines. In both cases, these figures are nothing more than fictional constructions, one becoming too real for fictional standards and the other appearing too fictional for reality standards.

To that end, the participants in “How to Work” deploy an array of strategies that demonstrate a notable political and ethical awareness, acutely conscious of the present art world economy and its instant commodification of any work made within (or without) the system. They use found objects and material sourced from the Internet, they document or straightforwardly imitate the reality that surrounds them in order to achieve the estrangement of all-too-familiar content, they stage performative interventions simulating and twisting reality, they perform a détournement on classical techniques and genres, and they employ seriality or chance procedures to make their works.The exhibition “How to Work” at Kunsthalle Basel brings together nine international contemporary artists from the generation that emerged in the first decade of the new millennium. Collectively, their practices, however varied, are indebted to Conceptual art of the 1960s and ’70s, as well as its manifold incarnations in the later, neo-Conceptual work of the 1980s and ’90s that, following the seminal “Pictures” exhibition curated by Douglas Crimp in 1977, critically engaged with politics of image- and object-making. In the 1960s, Conceptual art consciously mirrored the larger economic change from an industrial to service-based economy that had been taking place since the ’50s, as fields like advertising and information technology gradually advanced and more traditional industries went into decline.

“How to Work” attempts to look at possible ways of how one works as an artist today. The question of how to work in this cultural and political moment, and what that work should consist of, needs to be renegotiated or answered in a new way. The contemporary artists’ approach to work can be contextualized within the broader shift from material (manual) to immaterial (mental) labor, which is an indelible aspect of the change from an industrial economy (focused as it is on the manufacturing of specific products) to a service-based economy (providing as it does “solutions”). Even more recently, the knowledge-based economy has come to the fore, in which what matters is not the fixed and ready-available product or the way it is distributed, but how customers (now called participants) relate to each other. To counter the growing sameness of human relationships in the existing utopia of a global society that is composed of sharing, creative individuals, the artist’s work should make a difference. But can the very idea of making a difference be trusted?

The title of the Kunsthalle Basel exhibition quotes the artwork “How to Work Better” (1991), a ten-point manifesto by the Swiss artist duo Fischli and Weiss. Painted in large stenciled letters on the façade of an office building in Zurich, the titular work comprises ten short persuasive sentences (such as “know the problem” or “accept change as inevitable”) on how to work better, aimed at influencing the attitude of workers in order to improve the workplace environment, motivate creativity, and boost the quality of production—whatever it may be, wherever it is. At the same time, these new ten commandments seem to be retrieved from a creative director’s desktop trash folder (in former times, it used to be a dustbin), rather than invented by the artists themselves. The manifesto is patently generic, not tailored for any particular type of business, and the formulas it contains are so superficial that they can be read as a critique of the “aesthetics of bureaucracy” (a term often applied to Conceptual art, too), itself used as a cover for the constant strive toward the enhancement of “intellectual services” and the corresponding loss of tangible content in today’s creative industries, art included.

Fischli and Weiss’s “How to Work Better” also reads as a formal take on Conceptual art masterpieces like Lawrence Weiner’s enigmatic text works in block letters executed in galleries and public spaces around the world, or as a parody of formulations used in Sol LeWitt’s “Sentences on Conceptual Art” (1969), which include “Successful art changes our understanding of the conventions by altering our perceptions”. Interestingly, the source of the Fischli and Weiss work was a freestanding signboard featuring motivational sentences in English and Thai that the artists photographed in a pottery factory in Thailand in 1990. As cheap labor attracts global manufacturers to Thailand, local workers often travel abroad to find work, seeking better employment conditions. The motivational sentences appear to be gleaned from a Western European management manual, but when placed in a Thai factory, they immediately acquire an additional, distinctly Eastern flair. The Zen-like statements of “How to Work Better” seem to have lost their original intent in multiple translations – and money flows – across cultures and contexts.

The selection of works in “How to Work” at Kunsthalle Basel does not follow a thematic criterion, although many of the pieces exhibited address the economy of their own making and the way it relates to the larger economy. Accordingly, the title of the show is meant as a general framework of the question that every artist and worker today must face, and not as a fixed “theme” that the works should themselves illustrate. Rather than insisting on boosting quality, and instead of explaining “how to work better”, the exhibition proposes a critical reduction of the question, asking modestly how one works at all, now.

SKOR is proud to present Fear Cure, a new video by Finnish artist Pilvi Takala made from a collection of her visits to NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming) coaches in an attempt to be cured of her fear of swine flu and the impending flu epidemic. The work brings to the foreground how NLP methodologises the reorganization of human perception and physiological responses through altering associative imagery in the subconscious mind.
Fear Cure was produced as part of Prologues for SKOR’s debut in the series of symposia Actors, Agents and Attendants: Speculations for the Cultural Organisations of Civility, held on October 29 and 30 October, 2010 in Felix Meritis.

Culture(s) of Copy is about the phenomenon of the copy as a global cultural strategy. The discussion of intellectual property, as it has already been treated in diverse ways, is only one angle from which one can approach the topic. The ‘copy’ here is understood positively as a remake, a cultural translation and an achievement (“You have to copy a master to become a master”, “The best way to appreciate a master is to copy him”). The exhibition "Annex 6. The Politics of the Invisible Hand" is a contributing part of this year's ART IST KUKU NU UT festival that in itself is a preparation and run-up to next year's festival. The subjective study of the contemporary art scene in Tartu, a publication accompanying the project, maps the positions and movements, visions and structures in Tartu as a certain point in time and space. However, the exhibition that forms an annex to this study has a somewhat broader relationship with the topic. The goal is to review and analyze the socio-economic situation that is the inevitable background system for a contemporary cultural production. The work that paves the way for new nuggets of knowledge and cognitive nuances has been performed with the means offered by contemporary art and the study group is composed of a selection of artists who are active in Europe and treat the surrounding environment with a sharp eye. Main working methods include (self-)ironic distancing, demonstrative gestures and ambivalent images of comparison from life itself.
This exhibition "Annex 6. The Politics of the Invisible Hand" has no strict center or a certain leading narrative, it should rather be seen as the subjective selection of the various activity logics of "the invisible hand" and our responses to those movements. One must remember that "the invisible hand" that Adam Smith phrased and that became a metaphor for self-regulation in economics is indeed invisible, i.e. we do not see the hand, but rather the result of its action. True, in one case the artists managed to capture the hand on thermal camera, but there is still much unexplained in the hand's micro-movements. It directs, regulates and forces us to act in the ways it want. We are surrounded by the puppet theater of an invisible hand…
All works are penetrated by the parallel, crossing and penetrating topics that we can only start to articulate in keywords. The first topical direction is formed by works that reflect back specifically on the position of art and the artist, reflecting on the creative environment around them – they ridicule the principles of creative economy that the national cultural policy has adapted for them; make (self-)ironical remarks on the social position, survival means, working methods and "client relations"of the artist; visualize the problems of intellectual work. Doesn't it sound ridiculous, this direct, automatic and careless transfer of economic principles to the field of art and cultural production? Do we not talk too often about a mission instead of real income? Is being an artist more a matter of faith than anything else?
Another topical keyword might be the wanna-be mentality as a completely respectable road to a professional position, income, peace of mind. Artists depict – and perhaps secretly also ridicule – the attempts by themselves and other to be better than others, to be someone else, to imitate success and that winning mentality, to hide one's weaknesses, and to talk loudly of great successes. This portion of the works seems to outline this mental space that is filled with dominating values and is shaped by the media, employers, politicians and the entertainment industry. The locally grown neoliberal karaoke-capitalism, the foolish optimism that for years fed the economic boom, the faith in the infinite economic growth and the free market - aren't these the compensation mechanisms for various inferiority complexes that might require us to stop and look around with a (self-)critical eye?
One of the popular understandings of art considers art to be a mirror that should reflect life and reality around us. We wish to satisfy the desires of the greater masses and show our audiences a mirror – in this exhibition there are no myths, only reality itself! While the distortions might be great and the exhibition might seem like a carnival mirror, I feel confident in assuring that life in Tartu, Estonia and the former Eastern Europe really is that distorted and misshapen like a delirious nightmare. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

During the opening of the exhibition on Sept 8h, at 7 pm, a performance-product presentation by Visible Solutions LLC, and at 8 pm a screening of the "dünya dinlemiyor" ("the world won't listen") by Phil Collins will take place.

Open air cinema with short, surprising, funny, revolutionary and frightening short films, a cocktail bar, a barbecue and DJs and live interviews with the film makers.

With old work by the maker of Beavis and Butthead and three films from Finland: the minimalistic horror by Pekka Sassi (The Suburb Within), a failed attempt of Snow White to visit Disneyland (Pilvi Takala, The Real Snow White) and the indescribable, hilarious 18+ madness of Erkka Nissinen’s Vantaa.

Also: flash cameras in the mirror (Jasper Ellings, Flashing in the Mirror), a photographer that by accident makes a photo of a murder (Pivot, by the animation director André Bergs from Utrecht) and extra surprises.

Bar and BBQ open from 20:00, starting time for the films 21:00.

When the weather is bad, we will move to a nearby indoor screen.

There will be only organic meat on the BBQ and vegetarian options will also be available.

Goethe-Institut Hongkong and Edith Russ Site for Media Art in Oldenburg, Germany jointly present, in collaboration with Hong Kong Film Archive, the exhibition ‘Culture(s) of Copy’, a follow-up exhibition of the Institut’s ‘History Will Repeat Itself - Strategies of re-enactment in contemporary (media) art and performance’ (curated by KW Kunstwerke, Berlin, and Hartware, Dortmund) in 2008 and an earlier study of the Asian concept of ‘copy’, which was presented in the photo exhibition ‘Chinese Copy Art’ by Michael Wolf in 2007 at the Goethe-Institut Hongkong.

The exhibition ‘Culture(s) of Copy’ initiates from the exhibition that the Goethe-Institut Hongkong presented two years ago under the title ‘History Will Repeat Itself’. As that exhibition took a Western approach, we had in mind to follow up the topic with an exhibition from a perspective that involves Asia. It became clear that the term REPEAT should translate into COPY. ‘Culture(s) of Copy’ is about the phenomenon of the copy as a global cultural strategy. The discussion of intellectual property, as it has already been treated in diverse ways, is only one angle from which one can approach the topic. The ‘copy’ here is understood positively as a remake, a cultural translation and an achievement (“You have to copy a master to become a master”, “The best way to appreciate a master is to copy him”). The phenomenon of the copy is seen as a rewarding opportunity to understand and reflect on cultural differences beyond the rather poor terms of a dichotomy of East and West.

The works presented can be divided into different topics (’Archive’, ‘Theme Park’, ‘Claim of authenticity by media represented reality’, etc.). Some works use the stocks of art history. Existing artefacts of the economy or art are treated as an archive that one can make use of. The repetition of known formats and content is not for the sake of repetition, but for the sake of a new definition. The maxim of originality is thereby deliberately ignored – in the age of “copy and paste”, the creation of the NEW is bound by repetition, variation and cultural translation. Other themes include the process of copying itself and the relationship between context and content. Many of the works deal with the question of authenticity in a world in which reality is mediated mainly through the mass media.

Interestingly, languages are no exception. They don’t deliver what they are supposed to do: to find a title for this exhibition that is applicable to both the English language as well as the Chinese language proved to be nearly impossible. Words don’t copy, they translate.

The exhibition will later in the year be shown at Edith Russ Site for Media Art in Oldenburg, Germany from November 27, 2010 – February 2011.

HANDLUNG. ON PRODUCING POSSIBILITIES

BB4 takes the ambiguity of the German term "Handlung" – that is impossible to translate in all its levels of meaning, but it is somehow located between action, activity, agency and participation, but at the same time it could also mean story or even narration – as a starting point to examine diverse practices, which are proposing various forms of action. BB4 attempts to scrutinize and to exhaust the promise – that might just be a supposition – of art taking place in the public sphere and is it thus creating possibilities for (political) action or does the artwork itself has already inherited this moment of action? Therefore, the exhibition rather tries to articulate questions and suggests different prospects than to formulate answers. BB4 will show artistic projects that deal with direct involvement in actions, participation and public space as well as community based art, but also works that are based on questioning, correcting and subverting history and historiography form, among others, a central point. The biennial aims to intensify the interaction with the urban and political context in Bucharest by inviting participants from different fields.

CURATOR

Felix Vogel (b. 1987) is researcher and curator. Studies in art history, media theory, philosophy and aesthetics at HfG Karlsruhe and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. His research and curatorial practice is focused on the relations between aesthetics and the social sphere. Consequently, he is interested in areas linked to activism, gender, historical avant-gardes as well as participative architecture. In 2008 he edited two books for One Star Press (Paris): "Renaud Auguste-Dormeuil: Fin de représentation" and "Lia Perjovschi: Sense." and has written for different magazines, among others PAVILION, Cura, Displayer and AFI. Felix Vogel gave lectures in institutions such as Index (Stockholm), Evento (Bordeaux) and PAVILION UNICREDIT (Bucharest). He taught workshops and seminars at HEAD Geneva, Free Academy Bucharest and 1.Curatorial Symposium Sofia/Plovdiv.  Felix Vogel lives and works in Berlin.

Urban Research has been a successful program both at Directors Lounge Festival and in screenings in London, Hannover, Poznan, Freiburg, Essen, Dordrecht, St. Petersburg and Berlin. International artists present their vision of public space and urban landscapes. How is the condition of the public realm connected with urban space? Can we talk about urbanity as a common figure in urban life at all? Has public space been replaced by the electronic virtual spaces? Or, has public place been bounded, forcefully homogenized and “pacified” by surveillance and private security forces? Are there new developments, definitions and uses that make “public space” lively again? Artists find challenging views and concepts, or more importantly, they question anew the common concepts of urbanity.

UR1 Urban Research | Tomorrow, Night and Day

  In the Aboriginal tradition “Dreamtime” is the ancient time of the myths. However, in Western concepts, the waking dreams in cities rather manifest a possible future, something that has the potential to become manifest from its yet virtual possibilities. According to Walter Benjamin, the day-dreaming of popular myths discloses potentials of future changes; and following those principles, the Situationists propagated dérive, the aimless strolling in the city as a cure against the false desires of the society of spectacle. The artists in this Urban Research program use vernacular, mundane urban settings and landscapes for their dreaming and imaginative shifts from the ordinary and expected. They may be read as much more than just a happy visual game.

Morality is Witte de With's year-long leitmotiv, defining an assemblage of projects subdivided into several acts. They include six group exhibitions, a symposium, performance program, publication and web platform. Act III is the film cycle titled And the moral of the story is…

This curated program presents moral tales as told by artists and film-makers through the medium of the moving image. The films range from mainstream to art-house movies, from technically complex works with elaborate scripts and settings to hand-held, "homemade" films. Due to the ease of its digital production, reproduction and distribution (legal or otherwise), film is now a ubiquitous medium. Used and abused in the form of propaganda, or employed more subtly to reinforce (and undermine) dominant modes of thinking in society, film is one of the most sophisticated ways to transmit a moral message or explore a moral question.

Google maps is not merely the guarentee for a smoothly oriented tourist holiday, but also a preemptive strike against all the flaws and perils of an unpredictable journey, the mooching stranger, the muscle ache, the horrendous taxi bill. Its straightforward connection between A and B is the most obvious example of technologies' safeguarding design approach keeping us caught in the close neighbourhoods of ourselves.

Concomitant with arts reckless outlook for the unknown, the sequence of 12 artist videos follows another approach to traveling - a cartography beyond the map, a search for another world to walk through. Composing a chaotic, multi-layered journey, the videos presented try to re-route roads and paths and re-insert fantastic creatures back onto the landscape. Don't get to far out. Ahmet Ogut works with a broad range of media including video, photography,
installation, drawing and printed media. His work often borrows from the
experience of everyday life, which he observes and then amplifies and alters
to expose its many contradictions. He weaves reality and fiction, success
and failure, human tragedies and comedies to explore the failings and gaps
of political and social structures.

Pilvi Takala works with narrative forms such as video, artist books and
performance. Her work is based on subtle interventions in specific social
settings, such as a work place, a local cafe or shopping mall. By breaking
the rules in a subtle but constructive way Takala's actions reveal, question
and eventually reinvent shared truths.

The International Finns in Contemporary Art

Kunsthalle Helsinki presents previously unexhibited work by acclaimed Finnish artists who work internationally.
Artists featured in the exhibition are Adel Abidin, Elina Brotherus, Minna L. Henriksson, Gun Holmström, Laura Horelli, Hannu Karjalainen, Ola Kolehmainen, Pia Lindman, Robert Lucander, Kirsi Mikkola, Pilvi Takala and Kristiina Uusitalo.
Finnish artists have always travelled to Europe to further their studies and to work. Finland is a remote country, where the art scene developed fairly late and could not provide a livelihood to very many artists. Leaving home was a natural and sometimes necessary option.
Today, the "hot spots" of art move at an ever-increasing rate as artists constantly search for new things. Europe’s Mecca of art is currently Berlin, where there are also dozens of Finnish artists.
Travelling elsewhere is not the only way of being international, however: it can also consist of exchange, networking and hospitality. Artists’ residences have sprung up all over the world, Finland included: communities where artists from different countries work side by side.
– What is it like to work in an international setting? Why have Finnish artists left their homeland, and what does Finnishness mean to them? What is the price of internationality?
The exhibition is produced by the Finnish Art Society.

The September exhibition of MASA, by Pilvi Takala, will take place at the entrance of Beyoğlu İş Merkezi. The artist will present a video taken from her performance in Disneyland Paris.

Pilvi Takala often undergoes modest acts that are designed to disrupt daily life in semi-public locations. She generally records these acts with hidden cameras and edits them to share with her audience. This time, the artist embodies the main character of “Snow White and she Seven Dwarves”; a well known figure, created by Brothers Grimm and filmed by Disney in 1937, when it became one of Disney’s most important characters. Takala attempts to enter Disneyland Paris (Euro Disney), one of the most popular tourist attractions in Europe, while wearing the exact copy of the costume used by the “Real Snow White” inside the amusement park.

Pilvi Takala was born in 1981. She graduated from Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki (MFA) in 2006. Her previous works have been displayed in solo exhibitions in Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki; Galerija Miroslav Kraljevic, Zagreb; Ellen de Brujne Projects, Amsterdam; Galeria Noua, Bucharest. She also took part in the 9th Istanbul Biennale and is currently a resident at the Rijksakademie, in Amsterdam.

Pilvi Takala (b.1981, Helsinki) shows two works realized in 2008: The Messengers (installation) and The Angels (video). The Messengers is an installation created during Takala’s residency in Zagreb (2007/08), funded by FRAME. It is an intervention into Croatian media, more accurately a magazine called Story, specialising in celebrity news and gossip, and its fixation with local celebrity Vlatka Pokos. The basis of the piece is the idea of inverted gossip. Gossip can be any small detail about the life of someone famous as long as it portrays the person in a negative light. Instead of spreading juicy gossip, Takala sets out to report pieces of insignificant but positive acts whose value in scandalous terms is nil, yet when performed by a celebrity become newsworthy. These absurd little news items create a ‘rupture’ in the traditional tabloid formula through their lack of sensation and by being nothing more than a slightly naïve testament to people caring about each other.

The Angels (2008) investigates the illusion of safety and perfection in a highly controlled public space. Dressed as a shop assistant the artist performs bonafide acts of kindness, which could also be perceived as suspicious.

Takala’s residency was part of an exchange project organized between HIAP, FRAME and Galerija Miroslav Kraljevic.

Imagine yourself in your (extremely) (boring) daily office job. Like you do every morning, you enter the big office (located in an area of the city which is easily reachable both by car and public transport) through the main entrance - greeting the hostess at the same time as you enter your access code to grant yourself access to the office area.

On your way to your own desk you spot a new girl. Although she wears her hair somewhat alternatively she does look quite ambitious with those neat trousers and that jacket.

On your first way (of many to come that day) to the coffee machine you see the new girl sitting at a desk. The desk has nothing on it - no computer, and not even papers or a pen. The girl is sitting behind the desk and appears to be in deep thought.

Back at your own desk you inquire about the girl with your colleagues. It turns out that her name is Johanna and that she is the new trainee. Why she doesn't have a computer is also quite a mystery to your colleagues.

On your second way to the coffee machine (or maybe it's the water cooler this time) you spot the trainee still without a computer - and still heavily contemplating. You decide to speak up to her: "What are you working on?", you ask. "I'm doing some brainwork", she answers. Flabbergasted you continue your ways.

Back at your desk you realize that it's also your responsibility to guarantee the future of the company, and therefore to make sure that the trainees from your company mirror the well being of this company in their future occupations. You decide to send an email with a complaint to your manager.

The last time you go and fetch some coffee for that day you meet up with some colleagues from Finance. They too have seen a new trainee sporting some awkward (to say the least) behavior...

Pilvi Takala (Finland, 1981) has shown her work at the 2005 Istanbul Biennale, and more recently at Frac des Pays de La Loire in Nantes, Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, and the Turku Art Museum. Some of her recent groupshows inculde: the 5th Berlin Biennial, Kunsthalle Helsinki, and the Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center. Currently she is a resident artist at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam.

Kiasma’s partner Deloitte came up with an offer for an artist residence in their office building in Ruoholahti, Helsinki. The aim of the project was to re-examine the development of the cooperation between the company and the museum together with an artist. Pilvi Takala’s works open up the codes of different social situations. The Trainee is a work based on a one-month intervention, in which we see an initially normal-seeming marketing trainee starting to apply peculiar working methods.

The Trainee is a work based on a one-month intervention, in which we see an initially normal-seeming marketing trainee starting to apply peculiar working methods. Gradually she shifts from the position of someone others believe normal to the object of avoidance and speculation. The videos and slideshow reveal a spectrum of ways of looking after the odd member in a group. Sincere interest and bewildered amusement is juxtaposed with demands directed at the superior regarding the strangely behaving worker.

We see the trainee sitting at her workstation in the consults’ open plan office space or in the tax department library all day doing nothing. One of the videos shows her spending an entire day in an elevator. These acts or rather the absence of visible action slowly make the atmosphere around the trainee unbearable and force the colleagues to search for solutions and come up with explanations for the situation.

Masking laziness in apparent activity and browsing Facebook during working hours belong to the acceptable behavioural patterns of a work community. However, sitting in front of an empty desk with your hands of your lap, thinking, threatens the peace of the community and breaks the colleagues’ concentration. When there is no ready method of action, people initially resort to avoidance, which fails to set their mind at ease when the situation drags on.

What provokes people in non-doing alongside strangeness is the element of resistance. The non-doing person isn’t committed to any activity, so they have the potential for anything. It is non-doing that lacks a place in the general order of things, and thus it is a threat to order. It is easy to root out any on-going anti-order activity, but the potential for anything is a continual stimulus without a solution.
